April marks five months since St Wilfrid’s Hospice opened their shop in the heart of the Polegate community, and the shop is going from strength to strength.

The store, next to the station on the High Street, is brimming full of pre-loved items generously donated by local people. From soft furnishings to books, children’s toys to kitchenware and dresses to suits there is something in there for everyone.

‘It’s been wonderful to have been given such a warm welcome in Polegate,’ said Jackie Gordon, Head of Retail at St Wilfrid’s. ‘The local community has been hugely generous in donating and buying goods, and we are delighted to see a high number of returning customers each week.’

Volunteers are vital to the success of the shop. They donate their time to sort stock, keep the shop floor topped up with treasures and to serve customers. ‘We simply couldn’t do it without our wonderful team of volunteers,’ said Jackie. ‘They are a lovely bunch in Polegate, and we’re always looking for people to join us. No matter what your skills or experience, there is a role for everyone in our shops and we’d love to hear from anyone interested in spending a few hours a week with us.’

The Polegate shop is one of 11 St Wilfrid’s Hospice shops that raise vital funds for the hospice. Together, they make a huge difference to the care and support given to patients across Eastbourne and the surrounding areas. ‘Two-thirds of our funding comes from fundraising, shops and gifts in wills,’ explained Jackie. ‘Without the support of local people we wouldn’t be able to offer expert care to people at the end of their life.’
