EASTBOURNE Foodbank says the government must not cut the extra £20 it added on to Universal Credit during the pandemic.
The charity says: “We’re calling on the Government to keep the £20 uplift to Universal Credit and also extend it to legacy benefits to stop more people being swept into poverty.
“We’ve written to Caroline Ansell MP asking her to support this to help those in Eastbourne who need this support.”
The uplift, brought in to support poorer families and individuals during the Covid-19 pandemic, is currently due to end on 31 March.
Labour forced a vote to extend the increase last month, with Boris Johnson ordering Tory MPs to abstain.
However, six backbenchers voted with the opposition, and it now looks likely their wishes may be granted.
