Eastbourne Mencap have launched a pilot work placement program at Leaf Hall Community Arts Centre, for people with learning disabilities.

“ The New Leaf Café” will teach people  catering skills under the experienced Clare Hackney-Ring, formally of Community Stuff.

It is part of an ambitious plan to develop a social enterprise to enable adults with a learning disability to gain experience in a working environment. Whilst learning valuable knowledge and skills that they will hopefully use in everyday life.

Initially this cutting edge new venture, will involve  service users form the Hive Day Centre just around the corner from the community Centre.

Domenico Della Valle, manager of the  Hive, is very excited about the programme: “we are very lucky to roll out this type of programme, by offering training opportunity in a real environment,  its ripple effect allows  to tackle social problems, improve people’s life chances, provide training and employment breaks for those furthest from the market and  support local communities”.

People will be involved in all aspects of café life, in menu planning, food preparation, waiting at tables and also customer service.

Eastbourne Mayor Pat Rodohan and his wife  launched the exciting new venture at Leaf Hall on Thursday 25th November.

The New Leaf Café will then be open every Thursday with Mencap Clients serving a delicious 2 course lunch for £4.50.

We hope you will want to support this great new project.
