EASTBOURNE MP Caroline Ansell is urging everyone to be aware of crumbling cliff edges at Birling Gap.

She commented publicly after this picture emerged of people getting too close to the edge.

Now Caroline has spoken out.

She said: “Please, please be alert to the crumbling cliffs edges we have here. There’s a huge crack in the cliffs at Birling Gap.

“Unfortunately it’s not easily seen from the top and RNLI coxwain Mark Sawyer, a south coast safety expert, told the BBC: “It does look fine from the top but what people can’t see – as we do from the lifeboats – is how it’s underpinned.

They can’t see the erosion underneath them. There’s some huge holes underneath the earth and the grass up there. There’s no chalk at all. It’s a matter of time before those cliffs go.”

Caroline added: “We are so lucky to be surrounded by the beautiful South Downs and Birling Gap and Beachy Head but I urge everyone to stay away from the edges as we just don’t know when there will be the next huge cliff fall.

“My thanks as always to the wonderful work undertaken by the Beachy Head Chaplains, RNLI and the Coastguard.”
