The UK Government has announced political parties can now canvass door-to-door.
“However, we want to put residents’ safety before party politics,” say East Sussex Tories.
Therefore, the East Sussex Conservative Group has taken the decision not to allow any of their candidates or volunteers to canvass on the doorstep.
Working within Covid-19 safety guidelines, election literature will still be delivered so that the electorate will have a chance to see who their local candidates are.
They are hoping that other local political parties would follow this lead and respect the safety of residents, candidates and volunteers during the current Covid-19 restrictions.
The Leader of the Conservative Group, Cllr Keith Glazier said, “We value people’s safety in these difficult times and whilst the UK Government has given its approval for door-to-door canvassing, we believe many people would not appreciate it, and rather we didn’t! However we do want to have conversations with residents, so we will be calling people on the telephone and communicating via our candidates’ election literature which will have the candidates contact details.”
Chairman of The Eastbourne Conservative Association and a County Councillor for Ratton himself, Colin Belsey pictured, added: “I think that this decision is totally correct and hope that other parties might consider similar action. I will be out delivering leaflets and as ever very willing to accept phone calls, emails and other ways of contact.”
