A LEADING Eastbourne travel agent has criticised the 500 businesses who have joined a campaign urging public to ignore ministers and book a Summer holiday.

The businesses covering the bulk of the travel sector have joined the “Save our Summer (SOS)” campaign to demand Boris Johnson reopens travel by mid-May to prevent the loss of 2.5 million jobs at risk in the UK holiday industry.

They are offering anyone who signs up to SOS a refund or replacement holiday at different dates if the travel is cancelled or not possible due to Government Covid-19 restrictions.

Martin Wellings owns PST Travel in Grove Road, Eastbourne.

He said this afternoon: “The government have over reacted and not qualified what I would consider better advice.

We have been advocating for some time that people do not book anything for this year until we know how we are standing regarding the end of lockdown.

But in the meantime, by all means plan, and in all probability we will be able to travel within Europe earlier than we can go to one of the far flung destinations.

I see no problem in making a booking now for holidays in 2022.”
