Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne

Monday 7 – Saturday 12 March 2022

Olivier Award winners Griff Rhys Jones and Janie Dee will star in the acutely observed and heart-breakingly hilarious comedy An Hour and a Half Late at Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne from 7 –12 March.

This devastatingly funny portrait of a couple whose five minutes of candid conversation launches an outpouring of emotions, home truths, wine, nibbles and anarchy is by Gerald Sibleyras with Jean Dell and is adapted and directed by Belinda Lang.

Life seems good for Peter and Laura Simpkins. Home is a luxury riverside apartment. Their third child has finally moved out and they have more money than they know what to do with. They are just about to leave and meet friends to celebrate a lucrative business deal when Linda drops a bombshell.

Actor, writer, presenter, comedian and two-time Olivier Award winner Griff Rhys Jones has previously been seen on stage as Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s Oliver! Toad in the National Theatre’s The Wind in the Willows.

Griffcomes to Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre for the first time and he’s looking forward to performing at the Playhouse in the Park. He said “I especially love playing the older theatres… Frank Matcham theatres are great to play, as are most Victorian theatres. There’s a wonderful intimacy about them” Frank Matcham redesigned the Devonshire Park Theatre in 1903.

Janie Dee is one of the UK’s most versatile actors, the winner of Olivier Awards for CarouselComic Potential and Hello Dolly. Her recent credits include the Broadway hit Hand to GodFollies at the National Theatre, and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in the Theatre Royal Bath’s 2019 Summer Season.

Janie has a particular fondness for Eastbourne she said: “I like Eastbourne a lot. My aunty lives there, and I’ve done shows Sophisticated Lady and Mack & Mabel in Eastbourne. I want to swim in the sea if it’s possible when we’re there.”

Griff added “I’ve got so many friends who have become wild water swimmers so perhaps I’d better join them when we get to Eastbourne. We’ll see!”
