Scrapping free prescription charges for people over 60 and raising the qualifying age to 66 could have a devastating impact on the health of tens of thousands of older people.

So says Age UK.

Now Healthwatch East Sussex has issued this statement:

“On Thursday 2nd September the government consultation into proposed changes comes to an end.

The proposal is to bring the age threshold for exemptions from prescription charges in line with the state pension age, a shift from 60 to 66 years of age.

There are 2 options for change, one to align the threshold with the state pension age and enforce payments as soon as the change is decided and one to make the change but to retain a period of protection for those already in the age range 60 to 65 (those who currently benefit from an age exemption).
