An inaugural annual charity competition has taken place at Eastbourne Downs Golf Course.

The New Year Shot Gun competition was held on Sunday 2 January at the club on East Dean Road.

The event was well supported with 26 teams of four players taking to the course during a mild morning with a moderate breeze.

The winners were Dan Lindop, Dave Field, Simon Hadland and Adrian Norwood with an impressive 84 points. Second place went to Mike Smith, Terry Marsh, Craig Manser and Chris Wood and in third place were Steve Redfern, Pete Cable, Steve Twine, and Geoff Pack.

The club’s captain Phil Manser said the competition was very well supported and he hoped it would become a permanent fixture for the future.

Mr Manser said, “Once again thanks to Eastbourne Borough Council for allowing us to run the competition in aid of our Dementia charity, Terry as usual for the cards, all the catering/bar staff and Tim and his greens staff.”

“I am pleased to say we managed to raise more than £700 on the day. I would also like to say thanks to the local clubs and those who supported the day.”

“Looking forward we propose to have a prize giving shot gun in February or March with a date to be confirmed as well as Terry’s Fourball and monthly medals.”

Eastbourne Downs Golf Course is an 18-hole course on downland overlooking Eastbourne and the English Channel. Although it is a members’ club, non-members are welcome and there is also a clubhouse serving food and refreshments which is open all day.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, membership at the club has grown exponentially.
