AN over 55s group may fold after the council brought in new changes at the Sovereign Centre, where it has been based for 25 years.

Pre-Covid, members met every Tuesday and Thursday mornings to enjoy a mix and match of facilities.

This included short mat bowls, badminton, table tennis, gym, swim, line dancing at a time when the centre was managed by Serco.

The council now runs the centre, not Serco.

Here is Dave Hawkins: “As you may be aware the council has taken back control and is now managing the centre themselves.

The first thing they did was say that we could no longer come in the morning and instead gave alternative times of 12.30pm to 3pm.

This of course means if you want to have a normal lunch you cannot attend.

Not content with that they have now started building structures in the sports hall which has meant that we now have use of just one badminton court instead of 3 and 1 shortmat instead of 2.

The club had 300 members and also organised trips and vet togethers but the new rules have ruined everything and the council just don’t care.

The group is now in great danger of collapse which is shameful. Whenever the council tell people they take the health and wellbeing of their elderly residents seriously we can only watch their noses grow.”

He added: “We have already contacted David Tutt and the head of leisure at the council with our disgust and got back the same fob off letter from both. That is the level of contempt.”

The committee has now written to Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell about this.
