Residents across the district will be able to remember all those have lost their lives in wartime conflict at many annual services of Remembrance in the coming days.
In addition, Wealden District Council chairman Councillor Ron Reed, vice-chairman Angela Snell and fellow council members will be attending several events being held this month in November.
Councillor Reed said, “Remembrance parades and services across Wealden are always very well supported and are a chance for individuals and the community to honour those who have lost their lives in two world wars and the many conflicts that have taken place around the world since then.
“It is a time to remember the service and sacrifice of so many whether they served 100 years ago or today and reminds us we must all continue to strive for a better more peaceful future.”
On Armistice Day (Thursday 11 November) Councillor Snell will take part in the Armistice Day March and wreath laying at Polegate War Memorial. The service is in the Wannock Road Recreation Ground and gets underway at 10.30am.
Chairman Councillor Ron Reed will attend the Uckfield Armistice Service on Thursday 11 November at 11am at the War Memorial in the grounds of the Church of Holy Cross.
On Sunday 14 November Councillor Nigel Coltman will represent Wealden District Council at the annual Remembrance Service at the Hailsham War Memorial. The service begins at 10.30am.
Also on Sunday 14 November, Councillor Ron Reed will attend the Crowborough Remembrance Sunday Service at 10.30am at Crowborough War Memorial and All Saints Church; and at 3pm in the afternoon, take part in the parade from Luxford Car Park to the Church of Holy Cross for the Uckfield Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service.
Councillor David Watts will represent Wealden District Council at the Polegate Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service on Sunday 14 November from 10am from the Royal British Legion in Victoria Road to St John’s Church
The Heathfield Remembrance Parade and Parade will take place at 10am on Sunday 14 November at All Saints, Old Heathfield, and Cade Street War Memorial and Councillor Tom Guyton-Day will represent the council.
Other Remembrance services taking place across the district include Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council’s Remembrance Service on Thursday 11 November at 11am outside the Parish Office at the Triangle, Willingdon. Deacon Sue Wilkinson will be conducting the service and the Willingdon branch of the Royal British Legion will be present. All are welcome to attend. This is an outdoor event and social distancing and mask wearing are encouraged.
On Sunday 14 November at 11am there will be a Remembrance Church Service organised by Deacon Sue Wilkinson at St Mary’s Parish Church, Willingdon. There will be no parade beforehand this year, but the parish council, the Royal British Legion and other organisations will be in attendance for laying of the wreaths.
There will also be the annual service at the Ruthless Memorial at Butts Brow, Willingdon, on Sunday 14 November at 3pm.
