CARMEN Wednesday 16 March, 7.30pm

Congress Theatre, Eastbourne

After a long wait, the highly acclaimed Russian State Opera returns to the Congress Theatre with two powerful operas, AIDA 15 March and CARMEN 16 March.  ‘The show must go on!’… Eastbourne Theatres are delighted the producers have said that after lots of risk assessment and travel restrictions, the time is finally right to move on past the pandemic and start touring again.

Alexej Ignatow, producer of Russian State Opera explains “It is of no surprise that we were hit hard during the last two years. Together with the local theatres, we now hope that the worst is behind us and we slowly can return to normality. We are excited to be back in the Congress theatre and hope that the local Eastbourne audience will come in numbers to support us and this amazing classical art. Maybe, who knows, but the pandemic will serve as a restart to the opera genre.” – Opera needs you!

Of the operas themselves, the Russian State Opera express “AIDA is an opera with breath-taking melodies by Giuseppe Verdi, sung in Italian with English Surtitles.A gripping love story that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very end.

Verdi brings the ancient Egypt on stage with an evolving love story at the backdrop of war. The princess of Ethiopia (Aida) falls in love with the Egyptian General (Radames) and he is also besotted by her. Radames is chosen to lead the war with Ethiopia by the king and Aida is left to choose between her lover or her father and her country. This is a deeply moving opera overflowing with emotion and containing moments of despair and uncertainty. Aida is an unforgettable, inspiring experience.

CARMEN is a most powerful and enjoyable opera with Music by Georges Bizet, sung in French with English Surtitles.Feel the thrill and passion of love, jealousy and violence of 19th Century Seville in one of Bizet’s most popular pieces.

Its mix of fierce passion, gorgeous melodies, nail-biting dramatic confrontations, and musical wit has found favour all over the world almost since its first performance in 1875. The rich and colourful vigour of the gypsies’ scenes and the vibrancy, enthusiasm and intensity of the performance will reverberate long after the final curtain.

This truly powerful uniquely thrilling experience should be experienced by all!”
