THE business has been successfully carried forward through successive generations of the family.
By Barrie Crowhurst
Malcolm and Jennifer Baker started out as tenant dairy farmers. They both grew up in Ashburnham near Battle, where they were also married.
Malcolm contracted brucellosis in his early thirties from the dairy heard and due to ill health, they both decided to diversify into other avenues. They first started selling secondhand cars and making Birch brooms. They then purchased a three piece suite from the local paper which they sold the next week for a good profit.
From that they continued to buy suites and furniture from the paper which they sold from their old dairy on the farm and then delivered them in their horse box.
As the business grew they then took on the first unit at Burfield Park Hailsham. A family friend spent two days driving them around London where they found a supplier, an Indian gentleman named Kishore who was happy to supply them with beds and three piece suites which they didn’t have to pay for them until they had sold them.
