What a summer for Eastbourne! Bournefree Editor’s column for September

IT’S been a tremendous month for Eastbourne, with Airbourne and Tennis Week standing out as real highlights.

Airbourne proved to be a huge success – despite the train derailment near Lewes, the Red Arrows unable to be there, and the Fireworks having to be cancelled.

Despite all this – and with it proving a real challenge for visitors to get to Eastbourne – Eastbourne Borough Council and the Airbourne Team pulled off an amazing four days.

They deserve our congratulations – and our sincere thanks.

It was also an opportunity for Victoria Place to come to life – and what a great area it is turning into.

Yes, it took a long time but it has become a part of Eastbourne that we can all be really proud of.

Let’s hope the businesses are seeing real success after all the heartbreak and sometimes anger during the development.

The Town Centre itself is still under considerable pressure with improvement works continuing for a seemingly ended period.

Those works should be finishing shortly – and again let’s hope Eastbourne sees the benefit of this investment.

Because that is what it is – all these works – costing millions of pounds – is intended to boost the Eastbourne shopping experience.

Homelessness is back in the spotlight – has it ever gone away, because it shouldn’t.

Eastbourne – like many other towns – has a real problem with this, and until now it hasn’t been solved.

Now PM Andy Burnham has decreed that nobody should be living on the streets by Christmas.

That will prove a tough challenge – and he is adamant that local leaders ie Eastbourne Borough Council must take swift and effective action.

Will that mean taking over an empty and unused building?

EBC won’t have long to crack this one.

Happy September Eastbourne!
