MANDY spent many years working as a chef both at The Tiger Inn in East Dean and under Bill Collison at Bill’s Restaurant in Lewes.
Now she is making a huge impact in East Dean again with her new family-run cafe and restaurant, Sheppard’s in Downlands Way.
It opened last June and it’s quickly become incredibly popular.
Mandy Mulford – Eastbourne born and bred – said: “We are perfectly positioned in East Dean because we attract the village residents as well as people in Eastbourne and Seaford. We’re only five minutes’ drive over the hill from Eastbourne and the bus stops are right outside which is handy if you want a cocktail or two! As a fully licensed establishment we are able to offer a wonderful selection of wines, beers, ciders and spirits from across Sussex and beyond. Our cocktails are to die for and every Friday and Saturday we offer Half Price Cocktails from 5-7pm
“We have quickly established a reputation for top quality food, which is reflected in our amazing online reviews.
“More than 90 per cent of our produce is sourced from within Sussex, which means we have had no supply issues recently but also means what we can offer is of the very highest quality.
“We open at 9.30am during the week (closed Mondays) 9am Friday and Saturday, and our all day breakfasts are proving most popular. As well as the traditional British breakfasts we offer things like Blueberry Pancakes, French Toast and Indian Eggs (daal, coriander fried potatoes, topped with a fried egg)
“Our lunches are served from noon until 2.30pm with a varied menu including the The Reuben, a New York style toasted sandwich with pastrami, Swiss Cheese and sauerkraut, Chorizo and Potato Hash and more traditional items such as Jacket Potatoes, sandwiches and a daily, homemade soup.
“We also have our very own Sheppard’s coffee blend roasted for us by Hillside Coffee in East Dean.
“But we offer so much more in our very comfortable surroundings, both in and out. Have a full look at our menu on our website.”
The cafe and restaurant – converted from a former doctors’ surgery – is open five days a week and once a month for Sunday Brunch. It’s closed Mondays, opens 9am until 3pm Tuesday to Thursday, and then 9.30am until 10pm Friday and Saturday.
Mandy said: “We serve evening meals on Friday and Saturday – half price cocktails too on both evenings between 5pm and 7pm.
We also run regular quiz nights and we take bookings for private parties on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
“You can also order direct from Deliveroo. We offer takeaway and delivery. There’s free parking and where we are is a real sun trap which is perfect for our outdoor seating area. The atmosphere in the cafe is great, very welcoming and friendly. We welcome dogs and muddy boots! “We also have a private space upstairs which can be used for meetings”
