Eastbourne is on the map! And open for business!

That’s the message from Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell after a government Minister came to town.

She says: “It was a pleasure to showcase our wonderful town to the Tourism Minister Nigel Huddleston MP on Thursday. Tourism is key for our town and well over 1 in 4 jobs depend on it. Recovery here is vital.

Starting off at Eastbourne International Tennis from Devonshire Park – a huge draw for visitors and broadcasting Eastbourne the world over. Then an elevator pitch from Eastbourne Hospitality Association in the Eastbourne Wheel, Eastbourne Unltd Chamber of Commerce and Eastbourne Bid at Victoria Place, and then all aboard the hop on bus up to Beachy Head.

The Minister insisted that one of his absolute goals is to ensure that our tourism economy is an all-year-round offering. “When that happens we can start to pay people more and that increases the overall productivity of the sector.”

He is absolutely right. We need to move away from that hauntingly seasonal nature to employment which is why, here in Eastbourne, it is so important that we push beyond that traditional summer season and really look to go 365 with our visitor economy.

I took the opportunity to raise with the Minister my continued campaign to keep VAT at 5% for hospitality, to safeguard jobs and to support recovery.”
