COUNCIL Leader David Tutt is coming under huge pressure from The Friends of Eastbourne Seafront.

This group is dedicated to campaigning to get Eastbourne’s Bandstand and other seafront facilities repaired.

Now it wants to hear again from Councillor Tutt. This is their online post:

“Will Councillor David Tutt honour his promise regarding the Bandstand?

We are pleased that work has started to repair and reopen the Bandstand, albeit with reduced capacity in April.

WE HAVE WRITTEN TO DAVID TUTT TO REMIND HIM OF THE PROMISES THAT HE MADE AT FULL COUNCIL ON 18TH MAY 2022 WHEN WE PRESENTED A PETITION SIGNED, IN A MATTER OF DAYS BY 2319 PEOPLE.

The petition asked that:

1. That EBC prioritise the immediate need of the Bandstand above other projects for any appropriate funding opportunities that arise. (Please note the use of the word appropriate here – these would be grants/funding sources directed at restoration of buildings/places of interest so we were not requiring the Bandstand to take priority over matters like the cost of living crisis)

2. That EBC set up a planned, on going, increased and realistic annual maintenance budget and programme of works, with the aim to repair, restore and re open the Bandstand.

Cllr Tutt moved and Cllr Holt seconded a proposal that the Petition be taken as a bid to the Capital Programme 2023/24. Following the vote this was agreed by a substantial majority.

We have asked Cllr Tutt to honour that promise and to ensure sufficient funds are put into the 2023/4 budget for appropriate restoration, maintenance and running costs of the Bandstand.

Will he honour that promise and respect the wishes of thousands of local people and visitors? We await his response and will be examining the proposed budget when it is published.”

We look forward to publishing the response from David.
